Uvita’s “Whale’s Tail” is a Local Landmark That’s Worth the Price of Admission

One of the most famous geographical land formations in all of Costa Rica is located just a short drive from the majority of our luxury vacation villas.

The “Whale’s Tail” is a sizable sand and rock landmass that can be accessed on foot via the Marino Ballena National Park in Uvita. Due to its unique design, the Whale’s Tail actually looks like a giant tail on a whale. And, low and behold, this happens to be an area where a lot of whales migrate through each year, creating elite synergy between varying forces of nature.

Essentially serving as a natural land bridge between the beach in the national park and Punta Uvita, the Whale’s Tail spans approximately half a mile out to sea (650 meters). At its widest point, it clocks in at the size of three American football fields (270 meters).

So what’s the deal with this place? And how can you experience the Whale’s Tail for yourself? Well, that’s why we write these blogs. To investigate interesting things and inform our beloved readers about what’s happening in the southern Pacific zone of Costa Rica.

See the Landmass From the Sky, Then Take a Long Walk Out to the Ocean

We have a few rental homes in our stable that have wonderful sightlines of the Whale’s Tale from above.

These top choices include Casa Alta Vista, Casa Komorebi and Ballena Royale. From these properties in particular, all of which are located at more than 1,000 feet of elevation, the Whale’s Tail is either slightly off in the distance or directly down below the villa.

That means when the time is right — more on that in a minute — guests staying at these rental homes will witness the sea swallow up the Whale’s Tail with water, then slowly expose the entire reef/sandbar as the tide bottoms out. It’s a magical display of moon-driven nature that occurs in six-hour cycles, all day and night, every day and night of the year.

The Jade House, perhaps the region’s premier luxury vacation villa, also has a view of the Whale’s Tail, although it’s further in the distance than the aforementioned homes.

There are, of course, other ways to witness the Whale’s Tail from above. 

Any of the mountains between Escaleras and Uvita, about a 10-mile stretch of highway with multiple turnoffs, will have places where you can pull off to the side of the road to see the Whale’s Tail. Several local restaurants also feature tantalizing views of the sandbar/reef. Our picks to click include Mi Amore Ristorante at Vista Ballena Hotel or Gusto Italian Restaurant. Or opt for Don Roger Mirador Bar Restaurante. Lock in a table or bar stool at one of these spots and you’ll be a VIP for the show.

Once you’ve seen the Whale’s Tail from the sky, it’s time to carve out a few hours to walk the famous landmark for yourself. You can do so by entering Marino Ballena National Park in Uvita. The cost is less than $10 U.S. dollars per person. There are paid parking lots near the entrance, and plenty of free street parking further down the road.

Can I Walk to the Whale’s Tail in Uvita?

When planning to walk out to the Whale’s Tail, the absolute best option is to enter the national park two hours before low tide. The reef/sandbar is only exposed and accessible at lower tides. By midtide and higher, you need to start heading back to the beach. This is to ensure you are back before the Whale’s Tail goes bye-bye for a bit. Therefore, starting the walk two hours prior to low tide. This gives you at least four hours to walk the landmass and chill out in the hard sand.

Costa Rica’s Coolest Sandbar is a Daily Display of Strength vs Strength at Sea

The Whale’s Tail has been in the works for thousands of years, coming together as two powerful ocean currents, one from the south and another from the northwest, collide at Punta Uvita.

When these two currents meet, it creates a slowdown effect. Debris such as sand, sediment and rocks, get deposited into a giant pile. The result is what’s referred to as a “tombolo.” It’s a natural sandbar that connects a tiny island to the mainland.

One thing to note is that the Whale’s Tail is probably much larger than you can imagine. It’s easy to underestimate the walk out to Punta Uvita because you have to contend with soft and hard sand, as well as lots of sunshine. Packing shade, drinks and food is vital to enjoying yourself on that sandbar/reef. You can bring a snorkel and fins as well, but the water isn’t typically crystal clear like it is out at Cano Island.

Of course, we’d be foolish not to offer a final piece of advice that we learned the hard way.

On a trip to the Whale’s Tail many, many years ago, the author of this blog decided to pack a cooler full of beer. He dropped 18 glass bottles into a chest of ice, then spent the better part of a good day lugging around bad weight. The lesson to be learned? Glass is heavy, aluminum is light, and bad decisions are easy to make. Pack accordingly!
