River Rafting in Costa Rica Gets the Heart Going

As May arrives in the southern hemisphere, the winds of change are a stirrin’.

Naranjo River Costa Rica

Dry days will soon give way to wet afternoons, the beauty and power of tropical weather elements in full force. And with that precipitation from the sky comes opportunity, a chance to get your hair wet and your blood pumping on one of southern Costa Rica’s incredible river rafting tours.

From high-octane rapids to cruisy rides downstream, the region between the towns of Quepos and Dominical are bursting with fun, on-the-water opportunities.

Savegre River

The Savegre River offers the most family-friendly ride, with half-day and full-day options available in a mellow Class II/III setting. Savegre is an ideal choice for families with kids ages 8 and above. A pristine river with delightful waterfalls and canyons, Savegre delivers calm rafting spots as well as a few white-knuckle rapids. Tons of bird species, including toucans, parrots, osprey and kingfishers, can be spotted in trees along the riverbank. Rainbow trout are also very common in the Savegre waters.

Naranjo River

Ready to dial it up a notch? Take a crack at the mighty Naranjo River, which straddles the line between Class III/IV/V during Costa Rica’s green season. This tour isn’t for the faint of heart, but by day’s end you and your crew will have survived the washing machine of deep gorges and wicked rock formations, coming out on the other side as clean as a whistle, with enough photos and memories to last multiple lifetimes.

Division and Pacuare Rivers

Still not out there enough for you? Not a problem. There are also overnight rafting trips available that include camping under the stars along the Division and Pacuare rivers, where the rainforest is practically untouched and the only other voices you’ll hear are coming from the white-faced monkeys in the trees lining the shore. These are deep jungle rafting trips for serious thrill-seekers only. Know your limits, and then kick down that door.
