Time to Get Creative: Welcome to Galeria 1084
“Great art picks up where nature ends.”
Those were the words of Marc Chagall, a heavy hitter in the European modernist art scene of the early 20th century.
Now, more than 100 years later and with the help of a small group of expatriates, Chagall’s vision of what makes excellent art continues to bear fruit all the way across the pond at Galeria 1084, located in the charming southern Pacific coastal town of Uvita, Costa Rica.
Featuring an eclectic collection of handiwork from more than two dozen of the area’s top artisans, Galeria 1084, which first cracked open its doors in November 2022, serves as a breath of fresh air in a community that hasn’t historically featured many avenues for local craftspeople to flaunt their talents.
“Costa Ballena is lacking in true art gallery experiences, and we are that source for serious art collectors as well as gift shopping,” writes Paul Bond, one of Galeria 1084’s co-owners and a featured artist. “We are also establishing ourselves as a resource for unique home decor items for area homeowners.”
From oil-on-canvas pieces that twist the mind to stained glass and fluid acrylic bursting with eye-catching neon hues, veteran art collectors have plenty of opportunities to supplement their collections at Galeria 1084. Indigenous Bourca and Gourd masks dot the shop’s walls, with gorgeous turquoise and sterling silver jewelry also on offer. And the shop’s found-art collection — created from items gathered off local beaches — really pops as clients pursue Galeria 1084’s various display rooms.
Community art involvement is a top priority at Galeria 1084.
There are monthly workshops for adults and schoolchildren. Classes include basket weaving, mask painting, as well as mosaic and functional art events. Local and international artists show up for demonstrations on occasion, and there have even been book authors at the shop in the past, too.
