Rip Down a River

Combining the natural beauty of the nation’s rip-roaring rivers and opulent jungle settings with a dash of pure adrenaline, local rafting tours vary from gentle to gnarly.
When staying at our vacation rentals in Dominical, you’re never far from one of these awesome adventures. The three most popular rafting tours in southern Costa Rica are the Savegre River, Guabo River and Coto Brus River. Each tour operates in both the dry and green seasons. The rivers rush much more during the green season and are far mellower when the sky is clear and the rain has disappeared. On any of the aforementioned river tours, it’s important to pack strapped sandals or water shoes, a bathing suit, a change of clothes, towels, something to drink and sunblock. Cameras are optional and traditional sandals are not recommended. All tours include transportation from Dominical as well as a packed lunch. Here’s a short breakdown of each tour:
Savegre River
This is the most family-friendly option of the trio. Rated as a Class II and III river (medium to difficult on the international scale) Savegre is an ideal choice for families with kids ages 8 and above. A pristine river with delightful waterfalls and canyons, Savegre contains calm rafting spots as well as a few wild rapids. Tons of bird species, including toucans, parrots, osprey and kingfishers, can be spotted in trees along the riverbank. Rainbow trout are also very common in the Savegre waters. This tour leaves Dominical at 8 a.m. and returns by 3 p.m.
Guabo River
A popular half-day adventure that runs from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m., the Guabo River (Class II and III) tour spans 13 kilometers from the San Juan de Dios valley all the way to Dominical beach. With monkeys in the trees and river otters in the water, a journey down the Guabo ranges from tranquil to breathtaking. During this tour, customers can hike waterfalls during the lunch break. Or simply catch a few sun rays while surrounded by some of the finest sights the deep jungle can offer. Guabo adventures are recommended for travelers age 11 and older.
Coto Brus River
Not for the faint of heart, Coto Brus checks in with a Class III and IV rating, classifying it as a “difficult” to “very difficult” river on the international scale. With its rugged, rocky terrain, boats rarely enter these waters, making the Coto Brus almost exclusive to rafting. This is an all-day, action-packed adventure (6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) that will have you high-fiving everyone in sight by sundown. This tour is open to those who haven’t rafted before, but be prepared for a bumpy ride. Coto Brus tours are recommended for thrill-seekers 13 years old and above.
