Big Savings During Costa Rica’s Green Season

The month of September is one of the most affordable times of year to visit Costa Rica.

Costa Rica

This summer was an expensive one for travelers. Flights all over the world were pricier than usual, fueled by high gas prices and airline personnel shortages. Rentals cars were sold out and vacation rentals were booked solid. Now that summer is wrapping up and we head into September, deep discounts on stunning ocean view villas, adventure tours, and local activities can be had with just a little bit of hustle. Even the most luxurious vacation rental homes see their prices slashed from peak-season highs.

What is “The Green Season”?

Most online publications — and even many residents — refer to this time of year as the green season, with “green” being a clever variation of the word “rain.” In Central America, it rains in September, October, and November. Sometimes it rains hard, and that precipitation is why the jungle canopy appears so fluorescent emerald when you drive into town. There are incredible green season days as well, days when the tropical sun is golden, the plants are fresh and booming, and the beaches, trails, and parks are devoid of other visitors. It’s a give-and-take part of the year, a true roll of the dice like any great adventure should be.

What to expect in Costa Rica in September:

September is an awesome month to visit Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coastline. Of the green season months, September reigns supreme in terms of weather, ease of travel, and pricing. If you’re a surfer or a surf star in the making, the waves around Dominical are consistent and often uncrowded all month long. With ocean water temperatures above 80 degrees, packing to surf in the region remains as easy as trunks, t-shirts, and a few boards in tow.

Anytime you visit Costa Rica in the green season, it’s always going to be a bit of who-knows-what-will-happen as far as the weather is concerned. It won’t be cold, but it could be rainy. As long as you accept that going into the process, you’re going to have a pura vida vacation. One of the beauties of jungle weather is that it changes fast. Bad weather doesn’t last long. And anyway, warm rain isn’t such a big deal when you’re swimming at Nauyaca Waterfall, navigating an ATV through the mountains or catching waves at Playa Hermosa.

While you may sacrifice the amount of UV sun rays you soak in by visiting during the green season, you certainly won’t be sacrificing on rental home comfort and amenities. If you’re pining for a spa-like vacation at a brand-new vacation villa tucked into the mountainside with an infinity pool offering ocean views, Tulu Azul is marked down 30% from last month. After you get in a workout in the personal gym, head to the private balcony off the master bath for an outdoor shower — literally under the trees — to tie a bow around this complete jungle-shower experience. The poolside pacific-view palapa is perfect for a morning yoga session or an afternoon cocktail.
