Vacation Home Rentals-Dominical-Costa Rica-Gorda Vista
Imagine for a second that you’re staying at one of our fabulous vacation rentals in Dominical. Your bags are unpacked, the refrigerator is full of fresh produce and ice-cold drinks, and the only sounds humming through the neighborhood on this beautiful morning are those of amped-up howler monkeys and woodpeckers pecking.

What if you had this entire day to yourself? What could you do in Dominical—something spur-of-the-moment—that would make this a day to remember? Well, we have a few suggestions to help answer those questions. In fact, here are some ideas that don’t take too much planning, driving or money, but have potential to produce a vacation day to remember:

Hike to Nauyaca Waterfalls

Yes, there are some outstanding horseback tours that lead to Nauyaca Waterfalls, and they are well worth the $70 per-person fee. Doing the trip on foot, however, also comes highly recommended. It only costs $8 to purchase a ticket onto the grounds, and from the main starting point—a group of horse stables at the bottom of a dirt road—it’s about a 2.5-mile walk in each direction. The hike into the waterfalls is primarily uphill, although it isn’t very steep. It should take 90 minutes or less to arrive at the falls. Once you get there, you’ll be blown away by the beauty and power of this special place. There are two amazing waterfalls and a swimming area to splash around in and cool down. Pack water and food so you can stay for several hours.

Visit Hacienda Baru

With more than 800 acres of land, the Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge is an epicenter of one-of-a-kind wildlife in the southern zone. If you enjoy rare birds and breathtaking butterflies, Hacienda Baru is the place for you. Visitors can enter the facility for less than $10 and spend as much time as they’d like exploring the vast and unique grounds, including mangroves and secondary rainforest. There are plenty of guided-tour options available for a fee, for both kids and adults. The grounds are located only 3 miles north of the entrance to Dominical, making for easy access from your rental property.

Go Surfing & Hang 10

If you’ve never surfed before, you can book a same day, private surf lesson through us for $50 per person. This includes a surfboard, leash, private instructor, and drinks. Most lessons are done on Dominical beach, although Dominicalito, 2 miles to the south, is also an option when the waves are too big in Dominical. There are few things in life that compare to the thrill of standing up on a surfboard. If you have some surfing experience under your belt and don’t need an instructor, you can come to Dominical and rent a surfboard for $10 per day. Renting a board means easy pickup and easy drop-off at numerous locations along the main road in town.

Shop ’Till You Drop

Dominical isn’t New York City or London, but you already knew that. Nevertheless, there are some great boutique businesses in town that sell all sorts of local goodies, from detailed woodwork to handmade hammocks. It might be a lot of fun to park your car, walk into the local supermarket and grab an ice-cold coconut (pipa fria), and then peruse these quaint shops looking for future birthday presents and holiday gifts. Or, perhaps, you can just get yourself some new clothing and a purse you most definitely need! The prices here are reasonable, and the vendors will welcome you with a great, big Pura Vida! So there you have it, a quick-and-easy guide to spending a day in Dominical. Now stop playing the what-if game and go make it happen.
