My wife and I had the pleasure of staying at Toucan Alley this past January for ten wonderful days; from the minute we arrived on a late Wednesday night Neil made us feel welcome and went out of his way to get us settled in after a long day of traveling from the cold Northeast. We were immediately captivated by the beautiful accommodations. The home is decorated and designed to put you immediately at ease….but the best was yet to come. We awoke the next morning to the sound of Howler monkeys and the jungle coming to life around us within our own private 16 acres! As we took our first glance out from our master bedroom suite, words cannot describe the surrounding beauty and the awe inspiring blue Pacific, from our 180 degree panoramic view. My wife and I have had the privilege of traveling to many beautiful places but truly cannot think of a place that had more to offer in sheer beauty and diversity of things to do. We are typically very active people and love to explore the different places that we visit….but for the first time we really never felt the need to leave our accommodations at Toucan Alley, as it had everything we could ask for in its relaxing awe inspiring location. We did take an excursion on horseback up to Nauyaca Falls which was amazing and visited two of the many national parks and beaches…but were most happy just to stay in our wonderful Villa looking out over our jungle paradise and relaxing in the infinite pool. Thanks again Neil for always being available when called upon but also respecting our privacy which is what we truly desired most. Costa Rica is a magical place which we look forward to returning to many times in the future.

Costa Ballena craft beer festival

Costa Ballena beer festival

Mmm, beer.

Suds lovers are starting to get pumped for the second annual Costa Ballena Craft Beer Festival, scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 17 at Goathouse 169 near Uvita from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Goathouse 169, a popular restaurant, shopping and billiards center, is located on the Pan-American Highway at KM169 south of Uvita. The establishment is a 30-minute drive from many of our Dominical vacation villas.

The annual festival celebrates commercial and noncommercial Costa Rican draft beers, with an emphasis on education. Regional brewers expected to participate include La Bodega de Chema, Calle Cimarrona, Treintaycinco, La Troja, La Familia, Fercas Brew House and many others.

Presale tickets cost $20 online with a $1.49 transaction fee and can be purchased here. Each ticket includes entry to the event, on-site parking, a beer pamphlet with brewing information, prize opportunities from local sponsors, five tasting tickets for 5-ounce pours and a commemorative pint glass. Additional tasting tickets will be sold during the festival, and general admission tickets can also be purchased at the door. Furthermore, designated drivers can enter the festival for free, provided they don’t partake in any beer tasting.

Food will be sold throughout the day, and plenty of non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase, too. There will be live music, vendors, entertainment and games going on as well. The IPAs, Hefeweizens, Porters and Stouts will be the stars – no doubt about that – but there will be plenty of other fun stuff going on to keep the crowd rocking from start to finish.

Brewers will be located at an outside garden, so if attendees want to bring their dog it’s okay as long as the dog is well-behaved and on a leash. And although it’s an 18-and-older event, parents are welcome to bring their children. If the kids get bored, there’s a nice beach a kilometer away.

The festival also stresses the importance of utilizing a designated driver or taxi cab if you and your group decide to drink. There will be plenty of taxi options available on site near the end of the afternoon. Please make sure to play it safe.

So if you love tasty beer, groovy music, fresh food and fun people, make a plan to come down to southern Costa Rica and attend the Costa Ballena Craft Beer Festival in mid-January. Because, honestly, what could possibly taste better than an ice-cold draft brew on a warm Costa Rican summer day? In our humble opinion, not much.
